Prefatory Notes
The main titles are those from the definitive edition The Complete Short Stories of W. Somerset Maugham, Heinemann, 1951, 3 vols. For stories not reprinted in this edition, titles in book form are preferred to those in periodicals. In the few cases when the stories have yet to appear in book form, the earliest known title is used.
All references to Altogether are omitted because it is the same book (stories + preface) as its American edition, East and West, which was published a few weeks earlier. The only difference is that the English edition includes “The English Maupassant”, the famous appreciation by Desmond MacCarthy.
For the same reason the First American edition of The Complete Short Stories (Doubleday, 1952, 2 vols.) is not mentioned. It reprints word for word East and West (1934) and The World Over (1952). These two volumes are, of course, listed separately.
However, the four-volume edition titled Collected Short Stories, first published by Penguin in 1963, is included. Albeit very similar to the Heinemann edition from 1951, it contains one volume more and several minor differences in the order of the stories and in the prefaces. This is the most often reprinted edition and the only one currently in print.
All years and publishers refer to first editions. Reprints are not noted except in special cases when the titles or the contents are significantly different. Such special cases do not include editions with new prefaces only. It might be useful to list here the most important among Maugham’s short story collections (and two of his travel books) together with their publishers and dates of publication as accurately as possible:

of clarity, these months and dates are omitted below, although they are
taken into account when chronological issues have to be settled. Prefaces and
the like are also omitted below, but it must be remembered that

stories.

With very few
exceptions, noted of course, all books mentioned, save for an occasional
introduction, are entirely written by Maugham. Reprinting of his stories in
anthologies with multiple authors is kept to the minimum. Exceptions are made
about appearances in book form that precede those in Maugham’s collections.
Such early appearances may be closer to the magazine versions of the stories
and would thus make for interesting comparisons with the final texts. Very
occasionally, an anthology has been included because Maugham is joined by a
group of most exalted contributors and the book has a considerable intrinsic
value.
The major source is the 1973 Revised and Expanded edition of Stott’s bibliography (Stott). Cross-references are not noted, except in cases of mistakes and omissions for which the alternative source is given and in a few special cases of rare first reprints or important claims. All page numbers come from the Rothschild Catalogue (Rothschild). In both cases the references use the codes and the sections as they appear in the books themselves. See in the end for more details about the reference works.
From the Mar
1925 issue Hearst’s International was
merged with Cosmopolitan. Later
issues are given differently by different sources: International Magazine in Stott and Rothschild, Cosmopolitan in
